// BRUSHING

JUST LIKE YOUR NATURAL HAIR GETS TANGLED, HAIR EXTENSIONS WILL TANGLE TOO, BUT THERE ARE THINGS YOU CAN DO TO LESSEN AND PREVENT TANGLING—BRUSHING IS ONE OF THOSE THINGS. WHEN YOU HAVE HAIR EXTENSIONS, THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS BRUSHING THEM THROUGHOUT THE DAY.

HOW TO BRUSH YOUR EXTENSIONS IS IMPORTANT. BRUSH GENTLY. BRUSHING AGGRESSIVELY OVER THE WEFT LINE WILL CREATE "LOOPING,” WHERE THE HAIR IS HAND TIED ON, AND MOST TIMES THE WEFT CANNOT BE SALVAGED.

TO PREVENT BREAKAGE OR SHEDDING, YOU’LL WANT TO PLACE YOUR HAND AT THE TOP OF YOUR ROW OR WEFT WHILE BRUSHING YOUR HAIR. THIS WILL PREVENT EXCESS PULLING OR TUGGING AS YOU BRUSH OUT YOUR HAIR. IT’S ALSO A GOOD IDEA TO START BRUSHING YOUR HAIR FROM THE BOTTOM, REMOVING ANY TANGLES, AND WORKING YOUR WAY UP TO THE TOP OF YOUR HEAD FROM THERE. THIS METHOD CAN ALSO HELP REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF PULLING ON YOUR EXTENSIONS.

• USE A WET BRUSH OR BOAR BRISTLE BRUSH.

// WASHING

LET’S TALK ABOUT WASHING YOUR HAIR. IF YOU’VE EVER WONDERED, CAN I SHOWER WITH HAIR EXTENSIONS, OR HOW OFTEN SHOULD I WASH MY HAIR WHEN I HAVE EXTENSIONS? YOU ARE NOT ALONE. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMON QUESTIONS PEOPLE HAVE ABOUT TAKING CARE OF THEIR HAIR EXTENSIONS. WHEN IT COMES TO WASHING YOUR EXTENSIONS, THIS IS WHERE YOU WANT TO BE MORE LOW-MAINTENANCE. MY RECOMMENDATION IS TO WASH YOUR HAIR TWICE A WEEK WHEN YOU HAVE EXTENSIONS.

IF YOU WASH YOUR HAIR MORE, YOU'LL RISK DRYING OUT YOUR HAIR EXTENSIONS. WHEN YOUR EXTENSIONS ARE DRIER, THEY CAN BREAK EASIER, WHICH CAN LEAD TO MORE SHEDDING AND REQUIRE YOU TO REPLACE YOUR EXTENSIONS MORE OFTEN. THIS IS WHY I RECOMMEND JUST TWICE A WEEK FOR WASHING YOUR HAIR.

• BRUSH THROUGH THE ENDS BEFORE SHAMPOOING.

• I RECOMMEND DOUBLE SHAMPOOING FOR OPTIMAL SCALP HEALTH.

• DEEP CONDITION WEEKLY. BI-WEEKLY IF POSSIBLE.

• USE A PROFESSIONAL PRODUCT THAT IS SULFATE-FREE.

• MAKE SURE TO THOROUGHLY RINSE OUT SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER.

• DO NOT PUT CONDITIONER AT THE TOP OF THE WEFT. IT CAN CAUSE SLIPPING.

// STYLING

• USE A SCRUNCHIE TO SECURE YOUR PONYTAILS OR BUNS.

• IF YOU ARE HEAT STYLING YOUR HAIR, BE SURE TO USE A HEAT AND UV PROTECTANT BEFORE ANY HEAT STYLING. HIGH HEAT CAN BURN AND DISCOLOR BLONDE EXTENSIONS, AND THIS DAMAGE IS UNFORTUNATELY IRREVERSIBLE.

• USE OIL REGULARLY.

• KEEP YOUR IRON HEAT AT OR BELOW 380°.

// PROTECT

• MAKE SURE TO THOROUGHLY RINSE OUT SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER.

• DO NOT PUT CONDITIONER AT THE TOP OF THE WEFT. IT CAN CAUSE SLIPPING.

• PREP YOUR HAIR WITH A MIXTURE OF WATER OR CONDITIONER BEFORE ENJOYING ANY WATER ACTIVITIES AND RINSE IMMEDIATELY AFTERWARDS.

• USING 2 TIGHT BRAIDS OR BUNS IS THE BEST WAY TO AVOID TANGLING OR MATTING WHEN SUBMERGING YOUR HAIR IS WATER. USING A PONYTAIL OR LOOSE BRAID MAY NOT CONTAIN THE HAIR ENOUGH.

• USING PRODUCTS THAT ARE NOT SULFATE-FREE, PARABEN-FREE, OR HAVE TOO MUCH PROTEIN (OLAPLEX) CAN CAUSE A BUILD-UP ON YOUR EXTENSIONS AND SHORTEN THEIR LIFE SPAN.

• USING A HEAT PROTECTANT IS IMPERATIVE FOR KEEPING YOUR EXTENSIONS FOR MONTHS.

• I RECOMMEND A SILK OR SATIN PILLOWCASE FOR SLEEPING.

// NEVER

• BRUSH THE BASELINE OF THE WEFT.

• ALLOW CHLORINATED/SALT WATER TO SIT FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME.

• USE SUNSCREEN WITH AVOBEZONE WILL TURN YOUR EXTENSIONS PINK. MOST MINERAL SUNSCREENS ARE SAFE.

• OVERUSE OF PURPLE/BLUE SHAMPOOS.

• SLEEP WITH WET HAIR!! ALWAYS DRY EXTENSIONS AFTER CLEANSING.

• LIGHTEN YOUR EXTENSIONS.
